What needs to happen?
We need to convince Auckland Council and the Kaipatiki Local Board that the smartest option is the Shoal Bay Solution that keeps the course as 18 holes AND meets the flood resilience and capacity requirements.
A golf course AND flood mitigation for an exceptional storm event can work together AND is a smart, fast, economical solution.
Golf is the BEST recreational match for the ground and water conditions in AF Thomas Park (other sports have much more hard impact on the ground – whereas golf is soft on soil and grass). This is a no-brainer.
Golf is on a significant upswing in popularity – and Takapuna Public Golf Course is where they start
An amended course can STAY OPEN during construction. Most of the time, 18 holes will be available to players.
The proposed artificial wetland should be RE-CONSIDERED for its function, size, operation and maintenance. We know the wetter areas, ponds and drains dry out completely over summer. There was never a wetland on the land because the underlying fractured rock drains water away. It would have been an extension of the Smiths Bush forest across the road)
The lease between the Takapuna Golf Course and the Kaipatiki Local Board should be RENEWED.
The Takapuna Golf Course have spent millions upgrading the course, they employ 45 local people, and return the council more than $310,000 a year and more than $400,000 in saved maintenance. The Net Present Value of the golf course return to council in revenue and saved maintenance is $75 million over 30 years.
The SHOAL BAY SOLUTION put forward by Takapuna Golf Course will SAVE LIVES, HOMES AND BUSINESSES. It will also protect hundreds of mature trees on the course and preserve ecological habitats. The partnership the golf course has built with the community, contractors, iwi and experts will conserve these special taonga
The Takapuna Golf Course plan to SAVE MANY TREES, re-use soil, fairway turf and greens, rock and wood has merit – and huge support. The partnership the golf course has built with the community, contractors, iwi and experts will conserve these special taonga
The Takapuna Golf Course UNDERSTANDS the ground, the soil, the water, trees and nature of the park. They CARE about the course, community AND flood resilience
Government Ministers are VITALLY INTERESTED
Government Ministers are VITALLY INTERESTED in reducing flooding risk AND retaining the recreational asset that is Auckland and New Zealand’s most popular golf course. The Government is the biggest stakeholder, putting up 62% of the current funding with ratepayers (you) funding the rest. Takapuna Golf Course wants to be part of the funding partnership under a Public Private Partnership.
The SHOAL BAY SOLUTION is BETTER for the environment and manages risks during construction. It saves many more trees, exposes less soil to sediment run off in winter and dust over summer
The SHOAL BAY SOLUTION is SMARTER with massive support from the community, engineers and experts who are working with the golf course, Government Ministers, many Auckland Councillors and local board members from Kaipatiki and Devonport-Takapuna.
The SHOAL BAY SOLUTION can implement floodwater mitigation AND recreational public golf course fast, economically and efficiently with an OUTSTANDING RESULT that saves trees and nature in sympathy with the land, the water and the people.
